Together for children in Nepal

with combined forces for better medical
care for children in Nepal

Nepal, the land of the Himalayas, fascinating mountains and friendly people. A dream destination for many travelers, trekkers and mountaineers from all over the world. As tourists, do we think about how the people in the remote mountain villages receive medical help when we travel through this beautiful country?

The difference in medical care between Switzerland and Nepal could not be greater. The safety and availability of medical care by qualified specialists in modern medical facilities around the clock is a matter of course for us in Switzerland. In Nepal, however, the following three main reasons have a fatal impact on the country's health system:

Centralized health care:
Medical centers only exist in the capital Kathmandu.

Requirement of financial resources:
Many people do not have the necessary financial means to study abroad.

Limited training opportunities:
Studying medicine is only possible abroad.

Missing insurance:
There is no health insurance; every medical service must be paid for in cash before treatment.

These four factors mean that there is a great shortage of doctors in Nepal. Nurses are trained in Nepal, but due to low wages they often work abroad. This means that there is a shortage of them in hospitals and health centers in Nepal. Due to the lack of health insurance, every medical service must be paid for in cash before treatment - this also applies in emergencies. People from far-flung mountain villages sometimes undertake days of walking, carrying their sick or injured family members on their backs, to get them treated in the capital. Before they set off, they ask their relatives and neighbors for money so that they can pay for the treatment.
